About S. Murray & Co.

S Murray & Co
As of December 1st 2023 Sychem Surgical Ltd has acquired the surgical division of S. Murray & Company Ltd.  This strategic acquisition is a significant step in Sychem’s growth plan and with over 40 years of experience in the medical, laboratory and healthcare sectors, the Sychem group of companies brings key industry and manufacturing knowledge that will enhance the surgical division of S Murray.  However, for the time being, we have discontinued our association with Sychem Surgical Ltd following their acquisition, although our remaining inventory of S. Murray instruments remains available for immediate shipment, while that stock lasts.

S Murray & Co
was founded in 1915 by Samuel Muntz, the grandfather of the current Managing Director. Initially a manufacturer of medical glassware, the company quickly diversified into the manufacture and supply of products for the healthcare, medical, laboratory and domestic industries – both for the UK market and also on an international scale.

S Murray has manufactured high quality surgical instruments since 1948, following the acquisition of Sheffield-based manufacturers George Gill & Sons, who in turn had over 80 years’ experience of surgical instrument production. The subsequent acquisitions of Nowlin & Son in 1990 and Heeley Surgical in 1999 saw the range of own-manufactured instruments expand significantly and in 2003 the company relocated to a brand new, purpose-built, 10,000 sq ft factory, still in the Sheffield (UK) area.

S Murray & Co is totally committed to today’s quality requirements and became one of the first healthcare manufacturers to obtain BS5750 certification in 1991. The company’s registration has since been up-graded to ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 13485:2003 and includes all three of its manufacturing divisions in its scope of approval.

S Murray & Co has a long-standing reputation as a manufacturer of high quality, general surgical instrumentation; from artery (hemostat) to dissecting forceps and scissors to gouges. Whilst these items continue to form the foundation of production, investment in staff, tooling and machinery in 2010 and 2011 in particular, has seen a significant increase in the range of items the company is now able to offer.

As a prime British manufacturer, with an international network of distributors and a history of manufacturing expertise at its disposal, S Murray & Co is ideally placed to develop new surgical instrumentation. Working in partnership with surgeons and distributors, the company is always looking to develop new, innovative products to help meet the demands and challenges of an ever-modernising healthcare world.  Do please contact us if the instrument you are seeking is not listed - the entire S Murray range can also be found here; https://www.smurray.co.uk/surgical/

Manufactured using a combination of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship, all S Murray surgical instruments comply with the essential requirements of the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC – with full traceability maintained throughout the manufacturing process. Made from only high grade stainless steel in accordance to the specifications of ISO 7153-1, S Murray instruments are supported by a 10 year* guarantee. S Murray instruments are suitable for theatre (OR), ward, veterinary, dental and chiropody use.
