Important information from Cyalume®


How does chemiluminescent technology work?                            

Based on the same remarkable chemistry of a firefly–

Cyalume®
lightsticks are made of two chemical solutions stored separately within a plastic casing.

1) Oxalate: Fluorescers for color;
2) Activator: To stimulate color.

Oxalate is isolated and sealed in a thin glass ampoule; this tube is placed into a larger, transparent plastic  casing (lightstick), which is filled with activator and sealed. When the lightstick is bent, the glass ampoule breaks causing the two solutions to mix, resulting in illumination.

Are the products safe?

Yes! And we can prove it.
All of Cyalume’s products are 100% phthalate-free with patented formulations. Phthalates are dangerous chemicals used in everyday  products and are present in most chemical light formulations. DBP (Dibuthyl Phthalate) contained in many lightsticks produced in Asia,  has already been listed as a banned substance and is of very high concern.

Working towards a safer environment, all Cyalume® products are non-toxic, non-flammable, waterproof, and emit no heat or sparks. They  can be used near combustible gasses, liquids and leaking fuels, where ordinary sources of light could cause an explosion or fire hazard.

How long do the lightsticks last?

Cyalume® manufacturers a variety of chemical light products. Depending on the size and chemical composition of the lightstick, illumination  ranges from 5 minutes (Ultra Bright) to 12 hours. Exact durations are stated on packaging.

All chemical light devices, when activated, emit light in a decay curve. The light is brightest at the time of activation. The light emitted  decreases in intensity with time. All products are one-time use only and cannot be re-activated after the chemical reaction has finished.


Do Cyalume lightsticks work in any weather?

Yes! The products are waterproof, windproof, and can be used in severe weather. SnapLight and ChemLight products are 100% reliable  and are always ready for use. Cyalume Technologies devices become dimmer and last longer in the cold. They also become brighter and  last for a shorter period of time in heat.


What happens if a lightstick leaks or breaks?

This should not happen under normal use but might occur if you continue to bend the plastic once activated. Since the chemicals are  non-toxic, they will not cause injury to your skin or eyes. In the unlikely event of such contact, rinse the affected areas thoroughly with  water. Please note that the chemicals will stain clothing and/or furniture.

Are Cyalume® Lightsticks disposable?

All Cyalume® products can be disposed of as household waste. Only waste which meet the regulatory definition of a hazardous waste  are subject to the land disposal restrictions. Activated light sticks do not meet the definition of a Characteristic Hazardous Waste and  therefore, under the regulations, can be disposed of as a solid waste in solid waste landfills and incinerators unless prohibited by  site-specific solid waste facility restriction.

What is the difference between ChemLight® and SnapLight® LightSticks?

ChemLight® Military Specification Lightstick

ChemLights enhance both nighttime tactical operations and training safety.  Many of the military land, sea, and air applications are  enshrined in doctrinal literature from standard operating procedures to tactics, techniques, and procedural manuals.  Customers  such as the Department of Homeland Security, enforcement agencies, and FEMA have adopted uses for ChemLights similar to the  military and developed unique applications of their own.

ChemLights are available in visible and non-visible colors. ChemLights are the only chemical light product that meets the Defense  Logistics Agency (DLA) and NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) specifications. National/NATO Stock Numbers (NSN)  are printed on each military-spec product.  

SnapLight® Industrial Grade LightStick

In an emergency situation, every second counts. Flashlights can limit your ability to see and cannot always be relied upon.  How do Cyalume® lightsticks compare to other light sources?

Lightsticks don’t rely on batteries or electricity; there’s no bulb, switch, flame, spark, heat, smoke or fumes – just dependable, safe light.

Candles:
The Red Cross specifically warns against using candles for light due to the flame’ and the severe risk of fire damage. SnapLight Lightsticks are a great alternative.

Flashlights:
Provides limited, spot illumination and can be very expensive. They run on batteries, which immediately begin to drain when installed and may be run down when you need them. Batteries are toxic, leak, corrode, and harm the environment. Flashlights also rely on bulbs and switches which can burn out or wear out. Lightsticks are always ready when you need them and are completely safe.

Kerosene or oil lamps:
Pose a serious risk of fire, are not mobile, and cannot easily go where you need light - during power outages, evacuations and roadside emergencies.  Lightsticks are safe, portable and can go anywhere you need them.

Who uses SnapLight® and ChemLight® lightsticks?

LightStation® Emergency Lighting Systems

With an easy to locate photoluminescent label on the front cover, the LightStation provides comfort and assurance that a safe dependable light will be available when the power goes out. Each model can be mounted to a wall near exits, fire extinguishers, or in any area that has little or no emergency lighting. All LightStation models are filled with 4 hour-yellow 10” SnapLight lightsticks visible up to 1 mile in fog or smoke. Sealed with replaceable Tamper Evident Pins to provide a visual alert if used or tampered. LightStation® Models 4 and 10 Designed with a blast and fire resistant case. When the front cover is pulled open, all SnapLights activate to provide instant illumination, flooding an area with portable light for evacuees. 3" LightShape Circle Markers

The self-adhesive 3" LightShape Circle Markers can be used for medical triage, evacuation procedures, room clearing, trail marking, and many other applications. Activation is easy! Personnel Marker Light (PML®)

Dual PML® The Dual PML has two ChemLights that operate in warm (above 50°) or cold water (below 50°). SOLAS PML® The dual function, SOLAS PML is designed with a chemical and electronic light source for additional protection. The SOLAS PML securely attaches to a PFD. The electronic portion of the SOLAS PML is water activated and automatically starts flashing with a white high intensity battery operated beacon. The beacon can be manually turned on or off and will not dim. The ChemLight is manually activated by squeezing the handle. SOS® Ideally used as a signaling device, the SOS is perfect for rescue and outdoor safety operations. The lightweight SOS has a protective plastic outer casing that remains attached by a 30" lanyard and acts as a handle. What is a VisiPad? VisiPad is an innovative new ultra-light and ultra-flat chemical light device designed for a variety of emergency and tactical uses.

How is a VisiPad used? The uses for VisiPad and VisiPad IR are nearly endless and only limited by the imagination of the user.  They are perfect anywhere, easy to attach, light weight, extremely durable and writable with a marker.

How is a VisiPad attached? With an adhesive backing, holes and hooks in the corners, VisiPad and VisiPad IR, can be attached to an object or person in many different ways.   The extremely aggressive adhesive will stick to virtually any surface, including a damp surface and most fabrics, without leaving a residue.

What colors are available? VisiPad is available in the visible colors Green, Yellow (coming soon), Red, Blue (coming soon) and Orange (coming soon).  VisiPad IR is Infrared for covert operations.

How long will VisiPad provide light for marking? The Milspec duration for VisiPad is 10 hours with 8 hours for VisiPad IR.  Both will continue to glow much longer but not to Milspec standards.

How does VisiPad compare to chemical light sticks? The only similarity is that both are chemical light products.  VisiPad and VisiPad IR are unique in that they are extremely durable, designed to prevent self-activation, 56% lighter in weight than a 6" light stick and, with a flat surface, can be written on with a permanent marker or grease pencil.  Due to the light weight, small size and design of the VisiPad and VisiPad IR, many more can be safely stuffed in cargo pockets and pouches than any 6" light stick in the market.  More is always better!

Are VisiPad markers safe? Absolutely!  VisiPad products are safe, non hazardous, non toxic and non-flammable. They are not a source of heat or sparks. They can be used in confined spaces and stored in areas, which contain combustible mixtures of gases or liquids, where ordinary sources of light could cause an explosion or fire hazard. Working towards a safer environment, Cyalume Technologies complies with REACH regulation and offers phthalate free products.  All certificates and MSDSs are available upon request.

What happens if a VisiPad leaks or breaks? VisiPad products are designed to prevent accidental activation.  This means they are extremely tough and resistant to leaks and breaking.  If one were to leak or break the chemicals are non-toxic and will not cause injury to skin or eyes.  In the unlikely event of contact with the chemicals, rinse thoroughly the affected areas with water.  Please note that the chemicals  may stain clothing or furniture.

Cone Adaptor

Cyalume's Cone Adapters can be used by themselves or placed on top of a safety cone for improved visibility.  They are stackable and are easily stored. Recommended for use at DUI checkpoints, night-time construction areas, barricades, accident scenes, utility work sites, and more. Made in the USA

 

Magnetic Base

Cyalume's Magnetic Base can be attached to any steel or magnetic surface. The Magnetic Base allows the lightstick to be held in an upright position for maximum visibility. Twist a lightstick into the Magnetic Base holder and attach to vehicles, light post, or any other steel surface. Made in the USA

 

Directional Handle The self-threading Directional Handle comes with an attached lanyard which can be placed around the wrist to prevent it from being dropped. Lightweight and durable, the handle is recommended for police officers, road construction crews, valet parking attendants, or anyone who requires a highly visible light for signaling or directing traffic safety. Made in the USA
